What Is Tele-Optometry? How Eye Exams Work Without a Doctor in the Room

Tele-optometry gives patients a way to complete an eye exam with the support of advanced in-office testing and a remote optometrist. Instead of having the doctor physically in the exam room, trained technicians guide the testing process while a board-certified optometrist reviews your results through a secure video consultation. At Jaya Vision, tele-optometry is designed to make high-quality eye care more convenient while still providing a thorough evaluation of your vision and eye health.

How Tele-Optometry Works

A tele-optometry eye exam still takes place in a professional clinical setting. When you arrive, our team gathers your medical history, reviews your concerns, and performs the necessary pre-testing before the doctor joins virtually.

Diagnostic testing may include measurements such as your current glasses prescription, auto-refraction, eye pressure testing, and advanced retinal imaging. We also use Optomap wide field retinal imaging, which helps capture a detailed view of the retina without relying only on a traditional basic screening.

What Our Technician Does During Your Visit

During the exam, our trained technician helps complete the hands-on portion of your visit. This may include checking your visual acuity, pupil response, eye movement, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and other important visual function tests.

Our technician also assists with digital slit lamp imaging and contact lens video when needed. These images and results are then shared with our remote optometrist, giving our doctor the information needed to evaluate your vision and ocular health.

What Our Optometrist Reviews

Even though the optometrist is not in the room, they are still directly involved in your care. Through a live, HIPAA-compliant video consultation, our doctor can review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, evaluate your test results, and check your glasses or contact lens prescription.

A tele-optometry exam may help with:

•          Updating glasses prescriptions

•          Evaluating contact lens needs

•          Reviewing retinal imaging and eye health findings

•          Identifying concerns that may require follow-up care

•          Discussing symptoms such as blurry vision, eye strain, or vision changes

Schedule a Tele-Optometry Exam with Jaya Vision

Tele-optometry may be a helpful option for patients who need a routine comprehensive eye exam, a glasses prescription update, or a contact lens evaluation. It can also be convenient for patients who want an efficient visit while still receiving professional testing and doctor guidance. If the exam reveals signs of eye disease, urgent concerns, or findings that need additional evaluation, our doctor can recommend the appropriate next steps.
